Filler Longevity

Filler Longevity

Injectables are becoming more and more popular as a way to soften lines and create balance for the aging face. We all would like them to last forever and selecting the right filler for each area is something an experienced injector can provide.

We use dermal fillers for a variety of treatments, including filing fine lines and valleys and adding volume to areas such as the cheeks or lips.

Unfortunately, dermal fillers are temporary and will gradually be absorbed by the body over a 6-12 month period.

So how can you get the best results and have your dermal fillers to last?

Here are a few things that you should consider.

Choose a reputable provider

Make sure you choose the right injector. Very often patients price compare. Shopping around for the best price may be the right thing to do when looking for a refrigerator or camera, but the quality of your result will be a direct reflection on who does the injection and what product your expert selects. Don’t bargain shop! Look at the filler provider’s background, experience and reputation. Referrals from friends can be an excellent source. Check out their credentials. Also, many times a filler is not the right choice and non-surgical treatments may leave a less than ideal result. Going to a center that can offer all aspects of aesthetic treatments, such as fillers and skin treatments, as well as surgical options if needed, will assure you will receive the optimum treatment. Ideally, injectable fillers are performed in a plastic surgeon’s office by a provider who understands both proper injection technique and aesthetics.

Watch out for marketing ploys and advertising that sounds “too good to be true”. Many injectors, mainly non-aesthetic health professionals trying to tap in to the aesthetic market, will advertise an unbeatable price, and yopu may not be getting the product you expected. Extremely low pricing can come from manufacturer rebates, but if now, the provider may just be using a different product or diluting the product to keep the cost down. Check for reviews online, a reputable website, and before and after photos, and during your consultation, ask plenty of questions! Do your research before the visit. Injectable fillers can cause untoward effects when not done properly. Safety first! Do your research prior to scheduling a filler appointment to ensure not only your health and safety but the best possible results as well.

Follow instructions

Your provider will recommend being gentle on the areas that were treated and not to rub for 1-2 days. You may use ice to limit bruising and swelling. In addition, you should limit sun and heat exposure as well as alcohol for 1-2 days.

Follow your injectors guidelines closely and contact them with any questions.

Use the proper skin care routine

To achieve an optimum aesthetic result, you should maintain good healthy skin care including cleansing and moisturizing. Your skin care provider will often recommend a good skin care routine that is customized for you to help maintain healthy looking skin on the surface, while the fillers can reduce lines and add volume where needed. Healthy skin will make your results even more aesthetic. Using a skin care regimen customized for you will help improve skin texture, elasticity and tone.

Stay healthy inside out!

The best way to maintain an attractive, youthful appearance is by maintaining a healthy lifestyle. Here are some to focus on.

Lifestyle factors:

  • Maintain well balanced diet with plenty of fruits and vegetables and limit calories from carbohydrates.
  • Reduce stress which can accelerate aging
  • Get 7-8 hours of sleep daily
  • Stay hydrated, drink plenty of water.
  • Protect your skin from the sun, and use sunscreen.
  • Avoid smoking and excessive alcohol consumption

Fillers do not last forever

I discuss with my patients the need for maintenance. Rather than having the filler be gone completely, I instruct my patients to come in to layer the filler at the appropriate time. No filler will last forever and some fillers will last longer than others. Proper timing for treatments will maintain a softer, natural look without dramatic changes from one injection to the next. Most dermal fillers can last anywhere from six months to two years – sometimes even more, depending on the type. Most hylauronic acid fillers (most common type used) last between 6-9 months and will depend on type and location of injection.

How to treat FAT? Picking your doctor wisely.

How to treat FAT? Picking your doctor wisely.

If you are interested in having some body contouring, and by that, I mean removal of unwanted fat deposits in areas of the body, then your best option is to seek out a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon that offers both surgical and non-surgical options. Too often, patients go to the closest, least expensive body contouring ‘doctor’ who is not an aesthetic specialist or board certified in the specialty of Plastic Surgery. Credential are important! In addition, if the doctor performing the treatment only offers non-surgical options, the end result may fall short of the ideal. the old adage, “if all you have is a hammer, the whole world looks like a nail” could apply here. This past week I saw a patient that had CoolSculpting treatments followed by Laser Liposuction, both done my non-surgeons. Based on our conversation with the patient, it appeared that the patient had skin laxity that would not be amenable for a treatment that did not remove her loose skin. Needless to say, she spent a great deal of money ($9000 +), and time ( over 2 years) and still has not achieved an aesthetic result. A surgical tummy tuck and liposuction, (costing less than $9000 total) would have given her the ultimate flat/tight tummy she was seeking.

At the Aesthetic Associates Centre, my staff and I can offer non-surgical body contouring using Warm Sculpting- Sculpsure which is a 20 minute treatment, and typically requires 2-3 sessions. When surgery is needed, such as liposuction or Tummy Tuck, I can perform that procedure in our office surgery center or at the local hospitals.

My suggestion is to get a second opinion before treating your body to a procedure. Some individuals spend more time picking our an appliance than a medical doctor.

Summer Peel!

Summer Peel!

I am often asked when is the best time for a chemical peel. I would have to say that there is never a bad time! Chemical peels can restore dull, aging skin to a more glowing and youthful look!

Chemical peels in the summer may make your skin more sensitive to the sun, but there are benefits to getting your chemical peel in the summer.

Glowing Skin

During the summer, your skin tends to be more oily. A chemical peel can help to reduce oil production and help with the greasy, shiny skin.

Quick Results

There is very little downtime with chemical peels, and if you are planning a summer soiree’, or beach escape, a chemical peel can help to even out the skin tones and give your skin a more flawless appearance in just a few days.

Look GR8 with less Makeup

If you dread perspiring under heavy makeup during the summer, having a chemical peel can help you show off your natural skin without the need for makeup. A chmical peel can tighten the skin and reduce pores making for a more smooth anbd even complexion. It can also be helpful to reduce acne breakouts and irritation.

Clean Slate

If you are dealing with sun damage from late spring or early summer exposure, or notice some new aging spots, a chemical peel may be just what you need to “clean the slate”. Erasing the damage can get you started to a beautiful appearance.

Timing is everything

Don’t wait for the fall crunch. Get started now when there are more relaxed work hours and available time. Get you skin ready for the fall holiday season! Perhaps you have some breakouts from wearing masks during the COVID epidemic? Chemical peels can help reverse those changes.

Protect your skin

Chemical peels for the summer can create a beautiful appearance, but take extra precautions when outside and exposed to the sun. Putting a sunscreen on at least 20 minutes before exposure and reapplying during the day will help keep your skin healthy and prevent irritation. Use of a sunscreen with SPF 50 or higher will protect your skin.

National Acne Month

National Acne Month

Are the required facial masks creating “Maskne” …acne under the mask? Here are some suggestions to reduce breakouts and skin irritations.

6 tips to help prevent Maskne.

  1. Be sure to do a through cleanse in the morning and at night.
  2. Apply a facial moisturizer after each cleansing to restore the moisture barrier.
  3. Drink plenty of water, 6-8 glasses a day will keep your skin from drying.
  4. Sleep with clean pillow cases where your head rests.
  5. Work out a schedule at your workplace where you can remove the mask for 5 – 10 minutes every hour. This will allow your skin a break from irritation.
  6. Maintaining a healthy diet will keep your skin healthy too! Eat plenty of Omega-3 fatty acids to your diet. Foods that are high in Omega-3 include fish, like salmon, sardines and anchovies, also tofu, soybeans and flaxseed and nuts. Also, try to reduce your carbohydrate intake. Excessive carbs can create inflammation and cause your skin to breakout and become irritated.

Benefits of IV Nutrition Therapy

Benefits of IV Nutrition Therapy

I hate to get technical but to best explain the benefits of IV Nutrition therapy….
The sodium glucose co-transport system was first discovered in the 1960s by Dr. Robert Crane and according to the Lancet British Medical Journal, “The discovery that sodium transport and glucose transport are coupled in the small intestine so that glucose accelerates absorption of solute and water (is) potentially the most important medical advance this century.” – The Lancet, British Medical Journal, 5th August 1978
This of course is the nature of IV therapy. In other words, a solution of water plus glucose and sodium hydrates better than water.  This also functions to influence the transport of nutrients in an IV where due to osmolarity you can infuse therapeutic amounts of Vitamin C for example that would otherwise not be tolerated by the gut should they be taken orally. The osmolarity of the solution is critical for the transport of nutrients.
Anything consumed orally will need to have its form broken down.  The digestive process must breakdown and cleave amino acids, peptides and simple nutrients for absorption.  By the time you consume a food it is likely to have lost some of its nutrients. In addition the body wastes nutrients.  This varies based on the health of the individual. Your body’s GI tract can fail or limit absorption of nutrients. As a result they are wasted by the body not brought into the bloodstream. Even when someone has a healthy digestive tract cooking and food transport limit their nutrient density.
Looking your best at any age

Looking your best at any age

Looking your best at any age

Julia was tired of looking tired. At age 72, she came to me to seek out

procedures to make her feel better about herself. She told me she wasn’t

getting the “looks” anymore, and that men would not pay her any

attention, or in her eyes, would think, “hey look at that cute grandma”.

More and more, the ‘mature’ generation are seeking ways to look their

best. The American Society for Aesthetic Plastic Surgery recently came

out with their updated statistics. They found that the number of people

65 and older getting facelifts and cosmetic eyelid surgeries has more

than doubled over the last two decades. Many of these patients are ‘first

timers’ to the plastic surgery realm.

Joan Rivers, the late comedian and staunch supporter of plastic surgery,

once said, “Looking 50 is great- if your 60!”. She perhaps could be

credited for some older individuals considering plastic surgery

treatments. She often made jokes of her obsession, once quoted with, “I

wish I had a twin sister, then I would know what I would look like

without Plastic Surgery”.

After surgery, Julia commented, “ I was so excited about the

improvement in my neck, that I came back for the rest of the face.

People commented about how good I looked, and many didn’t know I

had surgery. The natural look took years off my appearance and allowed

me to feel good about being in public.”

Many individuals like Julia are staying healthy well into their later years

with increased wellness which includes better eating and lifestyle

choices like exercise. They feel young on the inside, but don’t like the

reflection in the mirror.

The fact that the baby boomers started turning 65 years of age five years

ago most likely contributes to the increase in facial plastic surgery.

Another big factor is that rejuvenating procedures do not have to be

surgical. Many patients come to me for non-surgical procedures to get a

refreshed look. Not only are these procedures less costly, they typically

have minimal to no downtime, which I see as important for the active

mature patients that come to my practice. Procedures such as Botox,

Dermal Fillers and skin care management using lasers and non-ablative

collagen stimulating treatments can provide an option to turn the clock

back and help to maintain a youthful appearance. I often recommend to

my patients that we begin the process by skin rejuvenation to stimulate

the collagen to create a more youthful surface on which to work. Often

this is done to reverse the effects of sun damage and smoking, both of

which are the main contributors to aging skin. Whether patients go on

to have surgical procedures is up to them, and since many are just

looking for that refreshed look, they will be content.

My job as a Plastic Surgeon is to listen to their concerns and come up

with a plan to provide the patients with choices to help them achieve

their goals. Because there are many ‘tools’ available now for

rejuvenation, we can offer large steps or baby steps to give one the look

they desire.

“If you look in the mirror and don’t like what you see, and there are

things that you can do to improve your looks, why not?” Julia said. “I

only wish I had done things sooner to keep up with the aging process.”

A doctor who performs both non-surgical and surgical solutions to anti-

aging can help to choose the best options for you. Consider seeking out

the services of a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and a consultation for

looking your best at any age.

Until Next Time, Be Well Buffalo!
